Review--Linger by Maggie Stiefvater

My dogs enjoyed my reading Linger—there were plenty of extra hugs as the story progressed with the same solid senses of hope and sadness as Shiver, the tale it continues. Ms. Stiefvater uses sadness like an expert make-up artist, highlighting the twists of Sam and Grace’s struggle for a human relationship and Isabel’s increasing fascination with the wolves amidst the depredations of lycanthropy. The hope comes, as it should, from the reader as she awaits the outcome of each change, whether it is Grace’s illness or Sam’s adaptation to being fully human again or even the way the new wolves will handle their situation as the temperature rises and they come back to themselves.

While I found myself relying on warm fuzzies to get me through parts of the story, I loved reading it. Moreover, I’m amazed at the way Ms. Stiefvater has deepened the story that she told in Shiver, making sure that the reader sees in the decorations of the fairy tale the strength of the structures that will underlay the character’s decisions throughout a lifetime. In addition, Linger is a compulsive read. Especially around the holidays, it’s a bit dangerous to assume you can snatch “just one chapter” in between gift-wrapping.

Linger is a welcome YA fantasy in which you find yourself wandering in and then deciding to stay. It’s a great story and I’m glad to have read it.

Good reading and happy holidays,
Chrissa

Taylor Jackson’s Fashionable Fairy Tale Photos

Taylor Jackson is a student with a love of photography and photo manipulation. Her images are meant to have a story behind them and combine aspects of fashion and surrealism. "Fairytales are often a huge inspiration in my work because you can take an idea anywhere," she says.

This is the first shot in a Rapunzel mini-series of photos. It was meant to look historic, beautiful and a little surreal. Her hair in part real, part photoshopped, and the photo was shot at a place called Eaton Hall, which is said to be haunted.

This picture was meant to be sneaky and fun. Rapunzel couldn't have been locked in a tower forever so I wanted to show her out on the grounds having a great time. The location also reminded me of Taylor Swift's music video for Love Story and so I titled this photo in her honour. "Today was a Fairytale."

My inspiration for this shot came from a combination of things. First was dreamcatchers and the concept of the catching bad dreams, and then I wanted to bring in some "Fairy Dust" to make the image a little more magical.

I wanted a little more artistic feel in this image. I set up the camera behind a hanging dreamcatcher but focused on the models eyes to blur out the foreground. At first I wasn't sure that I liked it but it really grew on me and I now it is one of my favourite shots.

If you live in the Toronto area she is also often commissioned as a family photographer, you can check out her portfolio here: http://www.onthebrightsidephotography.com/
