Review--Pegasus by Robin McKinley

SFT was excited to get the chance to preview Robin McKinley’s upcoming novel, Pegasus (available Nov. 2010). In this novel, Princess Sylvi undergoes a binding ceremony with Ebon, a pegasus, in keeping with the traditions of her kingdom. While these traditions have allowed the pegasus kingdom to flourish as the human kingdom offers protection against numerous enemies, Sylvi and Ebon’s binding allows them much greater communication than has been previously possible and may threaten this balance.

We meet Princess Sylvi at the age of 12, just before her binding ceremony as she is beginning to become more of a public presence in the court. McKinley’s introduction, through Sylvi’s cautious fascination, of the pegasi, whose language and communication is so different from that of humans that the maintenance of the relationship requires the intercession of magicians and the study of which may drive the most dedicated human students mad, is intriguing. These interlocking elements—learning about trust and friendship in the court setting and between species whose friendship may be dangerous—make for an engrossing read.

While the world-building had McKinley’s typical beauty and depth of description, there were a few creatures introduced early on with which I was not familiar (ladons and others) and I thought a brief physical description might have helped me to keep reading (which I desperately wanted to do) rather than run for Google.

The edge of melancholy and determination that fits in so well with the gorgeous cover image made this an enjoyable fairy tale that will linger after the last page is read.

Good reading,
Chrissa

A Fairy Good Time at the Texas Renaissance Festival

If you live near the Houston area, the TX Ren Fest is a great way to step back in time for the day. It’s open annually on the weekends of October and November. They have a different theme every weekend. My family went opening weekend, which was Oktoberfest. Next weekend (Oct. 23rd and 24th) is Pirate Adventure, “Yo-ho-ho.” It is so much fun to dress-up, and if you don’t have the garb already, there are plenty of shops to buy “costumes.” You can find more information at http://www.texrenfest.com/

Here are some pics from my family’s day at the festival. So much fun!

Fantasy Artist: Jenna David

Jenna David is a U.S. based fantasy artist that works mainly in oils. She recently received her BFA in Studio Arts and is working toward an MFA in Painting. Much of Jenna's art can be described as being influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite movement in that many of her subjects are inspired by myth and legend as well as classical literary works. Jenna's art combines elements of Fantasy art, Surrealism, and Magic Realism to form illustrative fantasy with elements of photorealism. "The creation of all of my artwork flows from the desire to tell a story. Just like an author uses prose and verse to weave an intricate tale, color and composition compel me to create and convey the spirit of a heroine."

A Mermaid's Secret
"A Mermaid's Secret" speaks to the myths of Ondine and those of the sirens, as well as water nymphs. This mermaid was inspired by the blue, turquoise, and aqua colors that express the spirit of the sea.

Arianrhod
"Arianrhod" illustrates the goddess within Celtic myth and legend that is known to carry the souls of the deceased to Emania. Celtic goddess of the Silver Wheel, Arianrhod is associated with and can transform into an Owl, and through the eyes of the Owl, can see the truth in the human soul.

Once Upon a Winter's Night
"Once Upon a Winter's Night" is a depiction of a woman reading a fairytale. Yet more significant, she finds herself not only within the story that she reads, but also as the heroine of the tale. This piece takes the viewer back to times of reading epic stories and captivating tales where the wish and dream of playing a part in the story comes to reality.

Daughter of Avalon
"Daughter of Avalon" represents many females within Arthurian legend and was greatly inspired by Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon. Specifically, this woman tells the legend from the perspective of characters such as Morgause and Morgaine (or Morgan le Fay), as well as those that dwell in Avalon that practice the old religion of the mother goddess.

Where Truth Dwells
"Where Truth Dwells" depicts the female spirit of Gaia or Mother Earth. The lantern and the light metaphorically speak to the idea of truth coming from within. Her roots reach deep within the earth to ground her in that truth.

Boo, Little Red, and Werewolves!

Hi Friends,

October is one of my favorite months: Halloween, Renaissance (which I hope to post about this month), the weather is cooler, and this year a fun supernatural addition to the blogazine, Silverweed.

What did I get after combining Little Red Riding Hood, werewolves, and superstition? Silverweed: a young adult dark fantasy. I will be a serializing the entire book here on Supernatural Fairy Tales, posting twice a month. (Subscribers will receive new chapters in their email, as well as the usual free fairy tale inspired short stories, articles, art, and reviews.) I would really love to discuss the chapters, so feel free to comment. In December, it will also be available in eBook at all major online distributors.

You can read more about it, including a brief synopsis, here: http://www.supernaturalfairytales.net/p/silverweed-serialized-supernatural.html (also on the menu bar at the top) where chapter links will be located after they have been posted and future post dates are listed.

A big thank you to
Diamonds and Toads and Folk and Fairy for posting an announcement about Silverweed on their awesome fairy tale sites. I would also like to thank The Fairy Tale Cupboard who will be posting about it soon.

Also this month, Chrissa will be reviewing a supernatural book. And special guest, artist
Jenna David, will host a gallery featuring her beautiful fantasy art.

I hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween!

Dorlana
